Main features / economic driver: The “Quadrilátero Ferrífero” is a group of municipalities in Minas Gerais with its economy based on mining. Recently, it went through two very serious environmental disasters, one in Mariana and the other in Brumadinho, which in addition to causing serious loss of life and environmental impact, the stoppage of several mines caused the local economy to suffer a sharp drop.
Project Goals: Implementation of the Shared Value Platform in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region, promoting economic recovery from the diversification of the economic matrix, which today is heavily dependent on mining.
Pro Natura’s role: Pro Natura and IFC were invited by the Government of the State of Minas Gerais to implement the Shared Value Platform methodology through the management and articulation of strategic partnerships, project implementation and support and elaboration of the program’s financial engineering, including fundraising.
Achievements: Identification of the 5 priority municipalities through an innovative methodology that punctuated the municipalities based on 10 criteria that consider environmental, economic, social, spatial and cultural aspects. Subsequent validation with local stakeholders and approach of mining companies to form a focus group involving the public sector, the private sector and civil society.
